Video Game Politics

My experience editing video has been very easy. I’ve done video editing for years even editing a thirsty minute school project in middle school. I have to admit it was a little hard to match the screen cast to my audio, but after just a little effort I was able to get the job done. All in all it was a pretty painless experience, there were no major issues and it was actually pretty fun. Unfortunately I did have a sore throat while recording it so the voice quality is not what I would prefer, but it wasn’t a big deal.

Moving on, the topic of video games and politics is really very interesting. I feel as though there are many times while playing through a game that I will witness subtle hints of social issues or political satire. I find this to be a very useful tool to convey a specific opinion or point of view. I think this can be used even more in the future to try to sway public opinion in a specific direction. However this can be both good and bad. On one hand, if there is something unlawful happening in the government or something, using subtle plot points, or full on politicized video games can be used to sway the public into a more stable or clear stance on an issue. Conversely though, this technology can be used to change public opinion for the worst. In this case, a company can use this technology to support their own interests.

Politics in video games is growing rapidly and increasing in relevance to current issues. In my opinion subtle political stances to sway opinion will grow as time goes on and gradually become a greater and greater force in the video game community.

  1. I had the same experience editing, as overall it was easy and actually enjoyable. I also am a little under the weather, so I feel you regarding the sore throat and audio quality. The article regarding video games and politics was also a very complex and interesting topic. As you mentioned, there are games that are geared toward all audiences, and with some of the more mature audiences experience at least some degree of political influence. It can definitely be used for the future, as you can use it to aid different causes. While it can be used to gain support, as you mentioned, it can be both detrimental or beneficial to the government or other political entities. The public opinion is very malleable, and with the majority of the population playing video games, it is a subconscious way of spreading the political agenda. I really like the video, and your thoughtful commentary is insightful. Keep up the good work!

  2. Even with the sore throat, your voice sounded very natural during the video and for a project comparing two websites; it sounds like you do this kind of thing all of the time! Additionally, I made a similar comment about video games, and not knowing whether these hints of political agendas in the games are good or bad.
